Keep Your Reality Away From Me

I think I'm Lost

danielladelarue asked: Can we talk about the Mills sisters in the Sleepy Hollow tv show on Fox for Fandom Friday? I think I heard somewhere that every episode passes the Bechdel test even though that's not the end all and be all of feminism in tv/film. I know some Sleepyheads that would love it!

iwriteaboutfeminism:

Sleepy Hollow is a great show for a ton of reasons and Abbie and Jenny Mills are two of them!

They probably have the most interesting and complex sister relationship on TV today. They have a complicated history, but that’s something that the show actually spends time on. And it has nothing to do with fighting over a man!

A considerable amount of time is given over the season to explore their childhood and how it effects their relationship in the present day. It becomes a process that they’re able to work through, and it was awesome to watch them throughout the first season on their road to understanding each other better and eventually getting to a place of mutual understand, respect, and love.

And I love that this depth saves them from the Strong Female Character trope. I love that they’re two individual women whose intelligence and value as individuals are central to the plot of the show and that they are able to exist with each other and work together as a united force.

It’s even more awesome to see this relationship, not just as sisters but as two developed female characters, embodied in black women. Representation is, in my opinion, Sleepy Hollow’s strongest asset and a major reason for its popularity.

And if Michael Brown was not angelic, I was practically demonic. I had my first drink when I was 11. I once brawled in the cafeteria after getting hit in the head with a steel trash can. In my junior year I failed five out of seven classes. By the time I graduated from high school, I had been arrested for assaulting a teacher and been kicked out of school (twice.) And yet no one who knew me thought I had the least bit of thug in me. That is because I also read a lot of books, loved my Commodore 64, and ghostwrote love notes for my friends. In other words, I was a human being. A large number of American teenagers live exactly like Michael Brown. Very few of them are shot in the head and left to bake on the pavement.

The “angelic” standard was not one created by the reporter. It was created by a society that cannot face itself, and thus must employ a dubious “morality” to hide its sins. It is reinforced by people who have embraced the notion of “twice as good” while avoiding the circumstances which gave that notion birth. Consider how easily living in a community “with rough patches” becomes part of a list of ostensible sins. Consider how easily “black-on-black crime” becomes not a marker of a shameful legacy of segregation but a moral failing.

A word of advice to trans women

Go to your nearest target. Buy a two pack of pushup bras (24$ for 2), and target’s bra inserts (12$). Then go to your nearest Walmart and buy the Vasserette Control Shapewear Panties (2.50 each), they do wonders for helping your tuck. There you go! You just saved yourself a lot of money, you can afford to buy enough to wear every day, and best of all you look fabulous. -@twidx

recs for trans women are so rare on tumblr!! spread this, people.
